Scaling is a preventive and curative medical procedure. It consists in removing from teeth the hard scale called tartar, deposited as a result of wrong brushing of teeth, drinking coffee or tea, or smoking tobacco. The tartar or scale damages gums, resulting in their lowering and exposing tooth necks, leading to gradual loosening of teeth and their loss (periodontitis).
The accumulated tartar can only be removed in the dentist’s cabinet using an ultrasound scaler. This should be performed once or twice a year, depending on individual needs of the patient, the diet and the oral hygiene.
The procedure is painless; however, temporary oversensitivity may occur afterwards. In the event of oversensitivity, tooth sealing (cap) can be performed after the scaling procedure.
Scaling is not recommended to:
- Persons with pacemaker,
- Women during pregnancy.
